Training

Participants have the option of riding 60, or 100 miles on Saturday and/or 50 miles on Sunday. To have a safe and enjoyable ride, it is essential that you physically train during the months leading up to the event.

We recommend getting signed up for a training program through TrainingPeaks and getting to know one of our supporting bike shops. The supporting bike shops will be planning and holding training rides and cycling 101 classes to make sure you are fully prepared. This is also a great way to meet fellow Bike MS participants!

FREE TrainingPeaks Access for Bike MS Cyclists!

TrainingPeaks is an online program with an interactive training log and dietary journal. It is designed to help individuals achieve their health and fitness goals. Subscription to the basic edition is free for Bike MS participants! Additionally, you can download custom-written cycling training plans which have been developed exclusively for Bike MS by renowned cycling expert Joe Friel! Learn more!

Educational Opportunities

Whether you are a first-time or long-time rider with Bike MS it is important to educate yourself as part of your training.   We have a wonderful local resource in the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA). Learn to safely share the road with cars, other bikes, and pedestrians. Most of these classes are provided free of charge. All classes are taught by League of American Bicyclist Cycling Instructors (LCI). While many are geared towards city cycling, the skills taught are transferable.  We especially encourage you to check out the Group Riding Skills Class when it is available. For more information see their website: http://waba.org/education/adult.php

Training Rides

Try out these two sample routes to help you train and prepare for our ride:

Oxon Hill Bike Club

The awesome folks at the Oxon Hill Bike Club have offered their library of rides to help our participants with their training. They suggest starting from Accokeek, Bryans Road or Indian Head as they will cover similar roads to our not yet released route(s). Be sure to check out their schedule of rides too! Non-members can ride one time with them as a guest.

We'll get more information and training rides posted as soon as we can!
